Dead & Company Offers Up Exploratory Performance For Night Two At The Gorge [Videos]

On Saturday Night, Dead & Company returned to George, WA for their second show of the weekend at the Gorge Amphitheatre as the latest stop on their ongoing spring/summer tour. The night prior, the band delivered their live debut of Robert Hunter‘s “It Must Have Been The Roses”, which originally appeared on Jerry Garcia‘s 1976 Reflections solo album.

Dead & Company took the stage to open their first set with “Bertha”, with John Mayer handling the vocal lead. Mayer and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti handed off some tasty licks, backed by their fierce rhythm section consisting of bassist Oteil Burbridge, and drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart. The first set continued with lively renditions of “Me & My Uncle”, “They Love Each Other”, and a pairing of “I Need A Miracle” into “Comes A Time”. Next, Bob Weir stepped up to the mic to lead his bandmates through his politically-charged “Throwing Stones” before the band closed out their first set with a “Lady With A Fan” into “Terrapin Station”, leaving the Gorge crowd hooting and hollering for more.

Following a brief setbreak, the band returned to open up their second set with “Playing In The Band”. Moving out of the song’s main theme, Mayer dazzled the crowd with some smoking hot guitar solos before leading his bandmates into “Uncle John’s Band”. The sextet showcased some tender vocal harmonies, with Mayer and Chimenti finding themselves in some delicate interplay. From there, Dead & Company crashed back into a “Playing Reprise”, which was followed by an electric pairing of “Deal” into “Viola Lee Blues”. Following the “Drums” and “Space” portion of the show, the band returned to work through solid takes on “The Wheel” into Bob Dylan‘s “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall”. Weir stepped up to the mic to lead his bandmates through a set-closing take on “One More Saturday Night”. The band returned to deliver a lone encore of “Touch Of Grey”.
