Drive-By Truckers Settle Into Brooklyn Bowl For Six Shows [Photos]

The Drive-By Truckers arrived in Brooklyn and decided to stay for a while. Playing the first of six shows at Brooklyn Bowl this past Thursday, June 20th, the Truckers have promised to make each night a little different. Despite the fact that the band only recently got back on the road, there was no rust on the guitars of Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley as the pair laid down energetic riffs on songs that spanned the band’s 20-year catalog. There was an even a tune from a not-yet-released album that picks up where “Ramon Casiano” left off in terms of the band’s stand on gun violence. “Thoughts and Prayers” says it all in terms of the empty words and promises that continue to provide little comfort and no solution to the problem. The Truckers’ commitment to the issue in the face of some blowback after the release of American Band (2016) deserves every music fan’s respect.

Night One’s opening guest was Craig Finn & The Uptown Controllers. The Hold Steady’s front man has crafted a completely different sound for his solo efforts, and the set included songs from his recently released I Need a New War and 2017’s We All Want the Same Things. Finn and the Controllers returned for Night Two, but subsequent nights will feature a series of different guests.
