J.E.D.I. Announces New York City Residency With Members of The Disco Biscuits, TAUK, Dopapod, More

Drummer Aaron Johnston’s J.E.D.I. project just announced a bi-weekly residency in New York City at Nublu 151. Beginning on July 2nd, J.E.D.I. will hit the East Village venue every other Tuesday and will showcase a myriad of musicians from all across the musical spectrum over the course of the run.

With regard to the residency, Johnston notes the infinite possibilities with setting up shop in New York City. As he explains

Since the early days of the Brazilian Girls, and as a musician living in the city, locking down a regular bi-weekly slot at a club like Nublu just makes sense. It’s essentially a hometown residency, and opens the door to so many possibilities and opportunities, from a musical perspective; especially for J.E.D.I. at this point in the project’s timeline. We’ve already got a killer lineup of talent confirmed every week through August, with future shows getting announced down the road after these first two performances. And with the sheer amount of talent living all over NYC, I want to make this a stop for artists to just come down, sit-in for a bit, and jam.

Bassist Marc Brownstein and keyboardist Aron Magner of The Disco Biscuits, guitarist Avi Bortnick from HOLA! and John Scofield’s Uberjam, TAUK guitarist Matt Jalbert, keyboardist Eli Winderman of Dopapod, and bassist Luke Bemand of lespecial are all confirmed to play, with a number of yet-to-be-announced artists on tap as well.

For the first show of the residency on July 2nd, Johnston will be joined by keyboardist Jason Lindner and bassist Jonathan Maron, along with special guest spots from Matt Jalbert and guitarist Will Hanza of Brooklyn psych-rock outfit Escaper. Lindner is a born and bred NYC stalwart with an accomplished resume, including playing with Pharaoh’s Daughter and on David Bowie‘s final album, Blackstar. Maron helped co-found the NYC-based and Grammy-nominated outfit, Groove Collective, and has played with everyone from Maxwell to Meshell Ndegeocello, and Tupac Shakur to India.Arie (purchase tickets here).

The July 16th lineup includes Aron Magner, Marc Brownstein, Avi Bortnick, and Jalbert. Both Magner and Brownstein have performed several times with Johnston and J.E.D.I., including a recent March run around the Northeast and down in New Orleans. Bortnick, a regular member of John Scofield’s outfit and of HOLA! with Joe Russo, also played in an early edition of J.E.D.I. back in January 2018 during a 4-night Colorado run, and most recently this past March at Nublu (purchase tickets here).

Along with a multi-night run back in March and sets at Denver’s The Big Melt and New Orlean’s Maison during Jazz Fest, J.E.D.I. has also released three singles via Color Red Studios in Colorado, including the most recent single “Momento” featuring Dominic Lalli (Big Gigantic), Borahm Lee (Break Science / Pretty Lights Live), and Josh Fairman (SunSquabi / Analog Son).

“Momento”:

The New York City residency promises to bring out an eclectic mix of musical special guests. Additional residency shows are scheduled for July 30th, August 13th, August 27th and beyond. Future lineups will be announced at a later date.

Tickets for both the July 2nd and 16th J.E.D.I. residency shows are currently available and on-sale – July 2nd TICKETS / July 16th TICKETS. For event updates and additional information, join the Facebook Event pages (July 2nd / July 16th).
