Phil Lesh & Friends Kick Off Two-Night Capitol Theatre Run With Jorma Kaukonen [Videos/Photos]

Phil Lesh was back at The Capitol Theatre along with his rotating accompaniment of musical friends for the first of two planned shows at the historic New York venue on Tuesday. The shows billed as Phil Lesh & Friends featuring Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna guitarist Jorma Kaukonen also saw the former Grateful Dead bassist share the stage with his son/guitarist Grahame Lesh, drummer John Molo, and keyboardist Rob Barraco.

The band started the first half of the show with their rendition of the Grateful Dead’s “Here Comes Sunshine”, a fitting tune for the nearly perfect spring weather experienced the New York Metro area on Tuesday. The set continued with “Cold Rain and Snow” as the older Lesh lead the way on vocals, followed by “Loose Lucy” and “Bird Song” with Phil again stepping up to take singing duties on the latter. The first set continued with a bluesy rendition of “Smokestack Lightning” with Kaukonen taking his first lead singing role of the night. The band then went into lively renditions of “Alabama Getaway” and “Operator” before closing out with a cover of Wilson Pickett‘s “In the Midnight Hour”.

The band returned to the stage to open the second half of the show with the always jam-friendly “Playing in the Band”, followed by a mix of covers starting with Bob Dylan‘s “All Along the Watchtower”, Cannon’s Jug Stompers‘ “Viola Lee Blues”, and Reverend Gary Davis‘ “Death Don’t Have No Mercy”, with Kaukonen again handling the vocals on the latter tune. The set continued with “New Speedway Boogie” followed by all members of the band stepping up to their mics to sing the choral vocals on “I Know You Rider”. The band then returned to “Playing in the Band” before continuing with “The Wheel” and closing with their rendition of “Liberty”.

The band finally sent fans home with an encore rendition of Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”. Watch the video below to hear a portion of Tuesday’s show closer.
