Ae3 is preparing to release their new record, The Wild Root, due out this summer via Vintage League Music. The album is the band’s first release in five years since the 2014 arrival of Woodstock Sessions Vol. 1.

On the album’s lead single, “Black Rider”, the trio comprised of Alan Evans (Soulive, Matador! Soul Sounds) on drums and vocals, Danny Mayer (Star Kitchen, Eric Krasno Band) on guitar, and Kris Yunker (Jenn Durkin Band) on keys works together to channel a powerful retro groove featuring a strong horn presence to pump the funk levels into overdrive.

“‘Black Rider’ lays down a powerful, hook-laden groove about persevering obstacles in life by finding your inner strength,” Evans explains about the track. “Most of these struggles we go through… People on the outside don’t notice or just don’t care but in finding that inner strength and peace, one becomes a Black Rider. The Black Rider navigates the hardships of life with strength, precision, and grace in the shadows like a ninja.”

Evans gets the animated treatment in the new video for “Black Rider”, as his projected physical makeup is created using the classic Ben-Day Dots comic book style to establish an orange-meets-beige color scheme. The animated Evans is the video’s featured subject before psychedelic shapes and overhead shots of a motorcycle rider take over the screen as the song continues to power along.

Today, Live For Live Music is thrilled to premiere the new video for AE3’s “Black Rider”. Check it out below:

While “Black Rider” may be Evans’ attempt to navigate through the hardships of life with the stealth of a ninja, the drummer is hardly hiding in the shadows these days. The Trio will head to London, England later this year for a performance at The 100 Club on October 25th. Prior to that, Evans will team up with his Soulive bandmates for a six-show, two-weekend run at New York City’s Brooklyn Bowl in July.

Last month, Evans released his first-ever solo album, Nothing To Say, also through Vintage League Music. On the new solo project, Evans stepped out from behind to kit to perform the album’s vocal, guitar, and bass tracks.
