The forthcoming David Bowie biographical graphic novel from Insight Comics, Bowie: Stardust, Rayguns & Moonage Daydreams, has finally been given a release date for early January of next year. With a spate of sensationalized homages to glam rock legends like the Freddie Mercury and Queen-inspired Bohemian Rhapsody and the recent Elton John Rocket Man biopic bringing in huge revenues, it was only a matter of time before fans received a creative interpretation of the late rock musician.

Pop culture-inspired artist Mike Allred has turned in some of the best-looking pages of his career for the upcoming project. Bowie is somewhat familiar territory for the artist, who has slipped Bowie and other cultural figures in the background of his work throughout the years as fun Easter eggs for fans. Allred’s style may not be as malleable as Bowie’s ever-evolving image, but his Warhol-inspired, eye-popping design fits perfectly as a lens for the book. Allred’s longtime colorist Laura Allred will fill the pages with a loving glow as the artwork comes alive with the spirit of the late auteur.

Author Steve Horton channels a mix of fact to go with a healthy pinch of mythology while crafting the tale of Bowie’s formative years and the building of one of rock and roll’s most storied creators. Though Horton hasn’t delved into the realm of biographies in his previous comic works, the plethora of information readily available about the late superstar and the incredible visuals of Allred allows the book to reach the status of a beautiful tribute to a beloved fallen star.

The project synopsis makes it clear how much sincere appreciation and understanding of Bowie is baked into the DNA of the book.

“In life, David Bowie was one of the most magnetic icons of modern pop culture, seducing generations of fans with both his music and his counterculture persona,” the storyline synopsis reads. “In death, the cult of Bowie has only intensified. As a musician alone, Bowie’s legacy is remarkable, but his place in the popular imagination is due to so much more than his music. As a visual performer, he defied classification with his psychedelic aesthetics, his larger-than-life image and his way of hovering on the border of the surreal.”

Bowie: Stardust, Rayguns & Moonage Daydreams is scheduled to ship come January 2020. Insight Comics released some gorgeous pages from their forthcoming book to wet fans’ appetites for the final product, which are seen below.
