Dead & Company Wrap 2019 Summer Tour With Triple Encore For Night Two At Folsom Field [Recap/Video]

183

Dead & Company were back at Folsom Field in Boulder, CO for one more Saturday night as the final performance on the band’s 2019 summer tour. Following a Friday night concert that was troubled with severe weather resulting in a delay to the show, Saturday’s forecast called for smooth sailing through a two-set performance and three encore closers to send their legion of dedicated fans home happy one final time this summer.

There were no clouds in the sky as the band took the stage this time around to begin their opening set with the classic Grateful Dead live combo of “Scarlet Begonias” into “Fire on the Mountain”. Following the jam-friendly segue with Oteil Burbridge taking lead vocals on the latter, John Mayer stepped up to the mic to lead the way on another fan favorite in “Brown Eyed Women”. “Loser” and “They Love Each Other” came next, followed by a “Bird Song” which eventually segued into “New Speedway Boogie”. The set came to a close with the band revisiting one of the Dead’s earliest bluesy-rock covers in “Don’t Ease Me In”.

The second half of the show heard the band dive right back in with “Playing In The Band”, which played right into a trio of 70s-era Dead classics in “Estimated Prophet”, “Franklin’s Tower”, and finally “Eyes of the World”. Bob Weir then led the packed football stadium through “Standing on the Moon” from the Dead’s 1987 Built To Last LP. Following the “Drums” and “Space” instrumentals, the full band returned to the stage as Mayer tore through “Althea”, only to have Weir bring the music back to reality with a hauntingly beautiful rendition of “Days Between”, making for a lovely reflection on the last month of shows as another summer tour draws to a close.

There was no “One More Saturday Night” on this Saturday, a rarity for Dead & Company setlists, but the band did lead the stadium in a monstrous return to The Crickets‘ “Not Fade Away” for the second night in a row. The Boulder stadium filled with the familiar chants of “You Know Our Love Will Not Fade Away” as they left the stage prior to the first of three encore songs.

“Ripple” stated the final push of songs on the tour with Weir and Mayer trading off Jerry Garcia‘s beloved lyrics to the folk ballad. Next came another one of Garcia’s timeless, end-of-the-night ballads, “Brokedown Palace”, followed finally by a return to “Playing In The Band”.

And just like that, another summer tour has come and gone, but it’s not been without its fair share of fun!

Dead & Company’s next scheduled performance, if you want to call it that, would be their appearance at the Woodstock 50 event, which may or may not still take place come August depending on whether organizer Michael Lang can pull off a hail mary attempt to save his troubled festival.
