Grateful Dead ‘All The Years Live’ Video Series: “My Brother Esau” From Oakland 1987 [Watch]

The latest live Grateful Dead video from the band’s recently-launched “All The Years Live” series is now available through the band’s official YouTube page. The new video features “My Brother Esau” from July 24th, 1987 at Oakland, CA’s Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.

As the band’s official archivist David Lemieux explains in the video’s description, “This Bob WeirJohn Barlow song was only in the Dead’s repertoire for four years, but it was a terrific first set addition, played in several arrangements, sometimes with a drumming introduction, and sometimes with the entire band coming in for a grand intro. I saw this at four of the first six shows I attended, and then it was dropped for good in October 1987.”

The Oakland show was a “Day On The Green” concert as part of the band’s Dylan & The Dead tour, which featured Bob Dylan fronting the band for their first of three sets. Debuted by the Dead on March 25th, 1983 in Tempe, “My Brother Esau” stayed in the band’s rotation through October 3rd, 1987. This particular version of “My Brother Esau” sees Weir struggle with the vocals early on and then quickly tighten things up. Moving out of the structured segment of the song, Weir, Jerry Garcia, and Brent Mydland lock into a groovy pocket, backed by Phil Lesh‘s hard-hitting bass bombs.
