The latest live Grateful Dead video from the band’s recently-launched “All The Years Live” series was shared on Thursday as a special Independence Day release and is now available to enjoy via the band’s official YouTube page. The latest addition to the Dead’s new video initiative is a feel-good performance of their famous “Touch Of Grey” hit, performed July 4th, 1989 at Orchard Park, NY’s Rich Stadium. The band’s 1989 Independence Day performance would go on to be an official archive release as View from the Vault, Volume One in 2000.

As the band’s official archivist David Lemieux explains in the video’s description, “The second set-opening Touch Of Grey is a triumphant rendition, one that Dick Latvala, when he first heard it, commented ‘that’s the best Touch Of Grey I’ve ever heard!’ This was the Dead’s first full stadium tour as headliners (they played stadium tours in 1986 with Dylan and Petty, and in 1987 with Dylan), and they played so well during this tour that they made these massive venues feel intimate.”

The song was part of the band’s hit In The Dark studio, which had been released almost two years prior on July 6th, 1987. The album, and the song, earned the band their late-career renaissance, helping the Dead earn huge amounts of new fans to the point which they were selling out stadiums across the country.

A sober Jerry Garcia can be seen and heard delivering an energizing rendition of the hit song with his fist held high in the air as he’s joined by Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, and Brent Mydland during the tune’s closing anthemic chorus lines, “We will get by/We will survive!”
