John Mayer continued his 2019 summer tour on Monday with a performance at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, PA.
Over the course of the two-set performance, Mayer performed songs from throughout his solo catalog in addition to nods to Ben Folds (via a “Narcolepsy” intro on “Love On The Weekend”) and Prince (via a snipped of “The Beautiful Ones” sung by band member David Ryan Harris after “Stop This Train”).
However, perhaps the most amusing moment of the show came in the middle of the first set, when Mayer “debuted” a new “song” in honor of a guy with whom all live music fans are familiar: Free Bird Guy. You know, the guy who shouts for Lynyrd Skynyrd‘s “Free Bird” between every song at every show because he somehow still thinks the decades-old concert joke is still funny and original. That guy.
As Mayer sang in the self-proclaimed Jimmy Buffett-style ditty, “Every show has got the ‘Free Bird’ guy, five high in the air… Every show has got the ‘Free Bird’ guy and I don’t know why he screams… ‘Cus ‘Free Bird’ is a very old song and I still hear it in my dreams… Oh ‘Free Bird’ guy, ‘Free Bird’ guy, everybody knows one.”
