Paul McCartney is trying his hand at writing musicals. The famous rocker announced on Thursday that he is indeed working hard at adapting the popular Christmas film It’s A Wonderful Life into a stage musical, something he’s never attempted in his career filled with creative accomplishments. McCartney is working alongside theatrical producer Bill Kenright and screenwriter/playwright Lee Hall to develop the music and book of the musical, which at the moment is still very much in early pre-production stages.

The 77-year-old rocker shared how his latest endeavor came about as well as how progress has been thus far in a statement shared with the overall announcement. “Like many of these things this all started with an email,” McCartney mentioned via a press statement. “Bill had asked if it was something I might be up for. Writing a musical is not something that had ever really appealed to me but Bill and I met up with Lee Hall and had a chat and I found myself thinking this could be interesting and fun. ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’ is a universal story we can all relate to.”

As Bill Kenright noted in the announcement, “[The music] exceeded expectations for both of us. The songs take you somewhere you don’t expect to go. They sound simple – but it’s deceptive. That’s Paul’s genius. I don’t have to tell any lover of music how extraordinary he is – but he constantly takes my breath away.”

The musical is expected to be ready for audiences at some point in 2020. Recently, McCartney also tried his hand at penning his first-ever children’s book with Hey Grandude!, which arrived in September 2018.
