PREMIERE: The Ghost Of Paul Revere Reimagines Billy Preston’s “Nothing From Nothing” For Charming New Single [Video]

138

The foot-stompin’, folk-hollerin’ boys of The Ghost of Paul Revere are back with an amusingly unassuming video for their cover of Billy Preston‘s “Nothing from Nothing”, premiering today exclusively on Live For Live Music.

The Maine-native trio’s rootsy take on the 1974 Preston tune is set to appear on their forthcoming EP, Field Notes Vol. 2, a compilation of covers, live takes, and previously unreleased tracks which guitarist/vocalist Griffin William Sherry says “brings to mind sketchbooks, traveling, and a feeling of history.” Adds banjoist/vocalist Max Davis, “The Field Notes are a collage of songs, sonically and thematically, and I think of them as bootlegs or basement tapes.” Field Notes Vol. 2 will be released in full on Friday, August 2nd.

That feeling of subtle nostalgia permeates The Ghost of Paul Revere’s approach from every angle. Sherry, Davis, and bassist/vocalist Sean McCarthy have been making music together from an early age. Need proof? Those are actual photos of them as kids on the single and EP cover art.

In addition to the three core band members, the EP features contributions from drummer Chuck Gagne and harmonica player Jackson Kincheloe (Sister Sparrow), and was produced by Spencer Albee.

The idea to rearrange this classic by one of history’s greatest session musicians came about organically, sprouting from a spirited rabbit hole dive among the old friends and bandmates.

As Griffin tells Live For Live Music,

“Nothing from Nothing” came together one day in our basement. We were talking about Billy Preston and what he added to The Beatles, and just started in on the song. It wasn’t long before we found our own voices in the arrangement and fell in love with playing it. Figuring out how to perform a piano- and horn-based song without any of those instruments is a ton of fun and very rewarding. Our ‘Field Notes’ series is meant to be a snapshot of where the band is at that time. After a couple months of playing on the road, we knew we had to record it.
