On Saturday night, Tedeschi Trucks Band returned to Morrison, CO’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre for their second and final performance of the weekend. Shovels and Rope and Blackberry Smoke handled the evening’s opening duties as part of TTB’s ongoing multi-band Wheels of Soul tour.
After the opening sets, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, their bandmates, and Blackberry Smoke’s Charlie Starr and Richard Turner kicked off the one-set performance with a cover of The Band’s arrangement of Holland–Dozier–Holland-penned Marvin Gaye classic “Don’t Do It”, last played by TTB on New Year’s Eve in 2011. Starr and Tedeschi handled the vocal duties, backed by the band’s electric horn section. Moving back into their regular configuration, Tedeschi Trucks Band worked through originals “Do I Look Worried”, “Just As Strange” and “I’m Gonna Be There” before diving into Derek and the Dominos‘ “Keep On Growing”. Trucks let it rip with a series of explosive slide guitar solos, grabbing the attention of any attendee who wasn’t already dialed in.

Following “Hard Case”, Tedeschi Trucks Band offered up a series of covers with Sleepy John Estes‘ “Leavin’ Trunk”, Rahsaan Roland Kirk‘s “Volunteer Slavery”, and Bob Dylan‘s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right”, which featured members of Shovels and Rope. The first Allman Brothers Band tune came next with “Don’t Keep Me Wondering”, which was followed up by solid takes on “Laugh About It”and Joe Tex‘s “Show Me” before the band invited Starr back up to assist on Charles Segar‘s “Key To The Highway”. Moving back into their 12-piece configuration, TTB worked through “Bound For Glory” and “The Storm” before closing out their main frame with a roaring rendition of the Allman Brothers Band’s “Whipping Post”.

Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, and their fearless musical cohorts returned to offer up a full-on Sly & The Family Stone medley in the encore slot, wrapping their annual Red Rocks Amphitheatre run in grandiose fashion.
