The Flaming Lips and The Claypool Lennon Delirium brought their co-headlining summer run with Particle Kid to The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY on Tuesday, where the three psych-rock bands delivered a trio of standout performances in front of a sold-out crowd.

The show, which was also live-streamed for fans at home tuning in via The Relix Channel, started with an energizing opening set from Particle Kid. The rock outfit is centered around Promise of the Real band member and Willie Nelson‘s son, Micah Nelson, who led the group through a set that masterfully blended roots-rock with strong elements of psychedelia and occasional fuzz rock.

The Claypool Lennon Delirium’s own 75-minute set opened with the quartet led by Sean Lennon and Les Claypool diving right into a cover of Pink Floyd‘s “Astronomy Domine”. Lennon wasted no time in letting his guitar shine with impressive lead work on the 1967 psych-rock tune while sharing vocal duties with Claypool. The band quickly returned to their own catalog as Claypool then led the way with those signature nasally vocals of his on “South of Reality”, the title track the group’s latest studio album. Lennon returned to the mic next to take lead on a dreamy but cryptic rendition of another new original, “Blood and Rockets: Movement I, Saga of Jack Parsons / Movement II, Too the Moon”. Following a brief solo filled with melodies from Claypool, the bassist quickly moved right into the opening riff of “Little Fishies“, a multi-part marathon of a rock tune, also off South of Reality.

Following a cover of King Crimson‘s “The Court of the Crimson King”, the band continued its set with more originals in “Breath of a Salesman”, “Boriska”, “Easily Charmed by Fools”, and “Like Fleas”. Lennon, whose rock and roll family heritage goes without saying, then turned to one of his father’s psychedelic masterpieces for a shining and entrancing cover of The BeatlesRevolver classic, “Tomorrow Never Knows”. The band closed their set with a pair of songs from 2016’s Monolith of Phobos in “Cricket and the Genie (Movement II, Oratorio Di Cricket)” and “Cricket and the Genie (Movement I, The Delirium)”.

Both the audience and The Flaming Lips seemed to be more than ready for the night’s final act by the time Wayne Coyne and company began prepping their equipment shortly before their 10:45 p.m. start time. A well-dressed Coyne, whose full, frantic hair and ageless energy still make him one of the most captivating frontmen in rock, took to the stage as Richard Strauss‘ “Also Sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30” (a.k.a the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey) blasted the audience into overdrive from the P.A. After a brief statement to the audience requesting noise and energy to the best of everyone’s ability, the band launched right into “Race for the Prize” as confetti cannons filled the air with color while inflatable balls bounced around the room. The celebratory feeling continued right into one of the band’s signature hits, “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1”, as a giant inflatable robot waved back and forth behind Coyne while he led the venue in a singalong to the title track from the 2002 album.

There was no large plastic bubble this time around (as with some of the band’s recent tours), but Coyne did ride out into the audience atop a large rainbow-styled unicorn like a triumphant rock and roll hero returning home after defeating the above-mentioned robots during the band’s performance of “There Should Be Unicorns”. Following performances of “She Don’t Use Jelly”, a cover of Daniel Johnston‘s “True Love Will Find You In The End”, and “Feedaloodum Beedle Dot” from their recent King’s Mouth studio album, the band delivered not one, but two performances of “The Star-Spangled Banner”, as the first wasn’t deemed fitting enough for the epic song. It’s worth mentioning that this was likely the coolest version of the patriotic piece ever delivered, as it featured Coyne wearing two enormous fake hand prosthetics which shot green lasers out of the palms while Derek Brown delivered the lyrics via distorted talkbox out of his guitar.

The band’s set came to close following performances of “The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song (With All Your Power)”, “Are You a Hypnotist??” and a feel-good performance of “All We Have Is Now”. The band’s one-song encore brought them back to the stage to send the audience home with their well-known ballad, “Do You Realize??”
