On Sunday afternoon, Trey Anastasio performed a solo acoustic set at the Newport Folk Festival, held at Newport, RI’s Fort Adams State Park.
Trey Anastasio opened up his solo acoustic set with “Sample In A Jar” before mixing up a mix of relatively new and older material including “Blaze On”, “Brian and Robert”, “The Inlaw Josie Wales”, “Set You Soul Free”, “Back On The Train”, “Farmhouse”, “Rise/Come Together”, and “Shade”. Trey continued with a tender take on “Summer of ’89”, which was followed up by “Sand”, appropriate for the beachside event. The biggest surprise of the set came next as Trey unveiled “Snowflakes In The Sand”, a staple of his 1999 hybrid acoustic/full band solo tour that had gone unplayed since a recent acoustic performance at Boulder, CO’s Macky Auditorium in December. Following “Steam”, Trey brought his performance to a halt with “More”, which he had to eventually abort and restart after originally starting in the incorrect key.
Later in the day, during the festival’s closing “If I Had A Song” set, Trey offered up a vocal duet with Lake Street Dive’s Rachael Price on a cover of The Beach Boys‘ “God Only Knows”, backed by Preservation Hall Jazz Band‘s horn section and a string quartet. The set also featured a “Rainbow Connection” duet by Kermit The Frog and Jim James as well as appearances by Brandi Carlile, Mavis Staples, Jason Isbell, and more.
