Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Michael “Flea” Balzary is beginning to gear up for the release of his autobiography. Titled Acid for the Children: A Memoir, the 400-page book is scheduled to arrive on November 5th via Grand Central Publishing, and will include a foreword penned by Patti Smith.

The forthcoming memoir was initially announced back in April 2018, and will look to share an insight into Flea’s “fascinating life story, complete with all the dizzying highs, and the gutter lows you’d expect from an LA street rat turned world-famous rock star.”

An official synopsis of the book also details,

“His dreamy, jazz-inflected prose makes the Los Angeles of the 1970s and 80s come to gritty, glorious life, including the potential for fun, danger, mayhem, or inspiration that lurked around every corner. It is here that young Flea, looking to escape a turbulent home, found family in a community of musicians, artists, and junkies who also lived on the fringe. He spent most of his time partying and committing petty crimes. But it was in music where he found a higher meaning, a place to channel his frustration, loneliness, and love. This left him open to the life-changing moment when he and his best friends, soul brothers, and partners-in-mischief came up with the idea to start their own band, which became the Red Hot Chili Peppers.”

Flea recently opened up about the creative journey on which this project has taken him in an interview focused around the soon-to-be-released book.

“It wasn’t difficult to write about it. It was difficult to share it,” he admitted in an interview with Publisher’s Weekly. “I fell in love with the writing process. Every time I put my head down for an hour and wrote, when I came back up it felt so satisfying, like I was engaging a part of my creativity that I had never engaged before.”

The Red Hot Chili Peppers recently capped their world tour efforts behind 2016’s The Getaway with a performance in the shadows of The Great Pyramids in Egypt back in the spring. The bassist also recently launched his own book club, with the first group reading assignment being Barracoon: The Story of the Last “Black Cargo” by Zora Neale Hurston.
