Today marks the official release of Texas Flood: The Inside Story of Stevie Ray Vaughan, an immersive new oral biography of blues guitar hero Stevie Ray Vaughan, via St. Martin’s Press.

The biography was co-written by Alan Paul, the author of New York Times best-selling Allman Brothers Band biography One Way Out: The Inside Story of the Allman Brothers Band, and Andy Aledort, the longtime Guitar World editor and frequent musical collaborator with Vaughan’s rhythm section, Double Trouble, among other notable artists. The book also features an extensive section of color photos from throughout Stevie Ray Vaughan’s life.

The story of Stevie Ray Vaughan is as heartbreaking as it is inspiring. Over the course of his brief life, the Texas native battled through substance addiction to become one of the most revered guitarists of all time. In 1990, after finally getting clean and starting down a road toward a long, healthy, creatively fruitful new act in his life, Vaughan died tragically in a helicopter crash leaving a show at the age of 35.

As Guitar World noted upon the book’s announcement, Texas Flood provides, “the unadulterated facts about Stevie Ray Vaughan from those who knew him best and were with him throughout every stage of his life and career:his brother Jimmie, his Double Trouble bandmates Tommy Shannon, Chris Layton and Reese Wynans, and many other friends, lovers, family members, fellow musicians, crew members and managers.”

Texas Flood‘s narrative is pieced together predominantly using quotes directly from Vaughan and his contemporaries (Aledort interviewed him five times in total before his death).

As Guitar World notes, “Paul and Aledort interviewed over 100 people, including Vaughan guitar heroes like Buddy Guy, B.B. King and Eric Clapton and peers like Billy Gibbons, Joe Perry, Eric Johnson and Warren Haynes. Texas Flood also includes over 170 photos, many never before seen from the private collections of the Vaughan family, Layton and Shannon.”
