An all-electric grand tourer from Lamborghini is reportedly coming soon.
The first pure EV to wear a Raging Bull badge would be the fourth model in the Italian marque’s lineup, which currently consists of the entry-level Huracan and flagship Aventador supercars, as well as the top-selling Urus SUV.
“If you look at the timing for a fourth model line, there is the potential that this will be the right time for a full-electric vehicle,” Lamborghini Research & Development head Maurizio Reggiani told Autocar.
He also hinted that the electrified 2+2 GT would be built on parent company Volkswagen Group’s Premium Performance Electric (PPE) platform. Robb Report notes that PPE architecture is already used in the Porsche Taycan and forthcoming Audi E-Tron GT super-EVs.
A “mature” design that’s not as aggressively styled as the Aventador or Huracan and has a “strong influence” from the 2008 Estoque concept was also mentioned. Performance would likely be slightly dialed back as well.
“Performance will be important. We must be fast but not quite in the same way as we need to be in our super-sports cars,” Reggiani added.
As for a timeline, Autocar says that the electric Lambo is “due to be given the green light by 2025.” That leaves plenty of time to develop battery technology. Currently, an electric GT would be expected to travel 350 miles on a charge.
And given that electric powertrains from Porsche and Tesla are already capable of sub-three-second sprints to 60 mph, it’s not hard to imagine that Lamborghini’s would be at least as quick.
Looks like we’ll find out for sure in about five years.
