Yo La Tengo closed out their 8 Nights Of Hanukkah With Yo La Tengo run at Bowery Ballroom in New York City on Sunday night. The band was joined by legendary jazz guitarist Bill Frisell for the bulk of their main set and also welcomed other guests including Laurie Anderson.
The trio kicked off their finale with a cover of Doc Pomus’ “Seven Day Weekend” sung as “Eight Day Weekend” in reference to the eight days of Hanukkah. Yo La Tengo then brought out Frisell for the remainder of their main set. Frisell was on hand for such classics as “Drug Test,” “Barnaby, Hardly Working” and “We’re An American Band.” Mentalist Rob Zebrecky joined in on vocals for a cover of Dream Syndicate’s “The Days Of Wine & Roses” towards the middle of the set and Joe Puleo helped out on organ for the penultimate song of the set, “I Heard You Looking.”
Yo La Tengo and Anderson started the encore with a drone-heavy rendition of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” a cover debuted during last year’s run. Anderson remained on hand for the Velvet Underground’s “Venus In Furs,” a song written by her late husband Lou Reed. The trio then ended the residency with special guest Marilyn Kaplan (Ira Kaplan’s mother) as they typically do by performing “My Little Corner Of The World.”
