Umphrey’s McGee delivered the first of four concerts at Denver’s Fillmore Auditorium for their 2019 New Year’s run. UM offered up a Van Halen debut as well as a number of bust outs for the Mile High City.
Umph got straight into those bust outs with “Flamethrower,” last time played on June 28, 2018 for a 134 show gap. The Denver rendition marked just the 30th time the band played the rarity. “Flamethrower” led into “Attachments” followed by “Puppet String” which in turn segued into “Soul Food” one and two before returning to “Puppet String.” “The Crooked One” followed ahead of “All Things Ninja” — an old school instrumental staple of the band but one they had not played since October 18, 2018 for a 104 show absence — to close out the first frame.
The second set got underway with “Hurt Bird Bath” followed by “Wife Soup.” “Muff II: The Revenge” came next. Another UM classic that has become a rarity, the Fillmore performance marked just the second time the band played the song in 2019. They had not played the song twice in a calendar year since 2010 and the song made an appearance for just the sixth time since 2002. Umph kept the bust outs coming with “Full Frontal,” gracing an Umphrey’s setlist for just the 11th time. “Full Frontal” was the biggest bust out of the night chronologically speaking, last time played on January 14, 2017 for a 268 show gap. The song would segue into “Day Nurse” followed by the debut of Van Halen’s “Unchained” from the classic rock band’s 1981 album Fair Warning. After “Search 4” the band closed out the second set with “August.”
Umphrey’s McGee retook the stage for an encore of The Who anthem “Baba O’Riley.” Check out pro-shot video of the first and second set openers below:
