Brandi Carlile’s Girls Just Wanna Weekend 2020 Begins In Mexico

108

Brandi Carlile’s Girls Just Wanna Weekend 2020 began yesterday at Hard Rock Hotel in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Night one of the four-night event that debuted last year was disrupted by thunderstorms in the area. Carlile’s first of three Girls Just Wanna Weekend shows was forced to be played indoors and singer-songwriter Patty Griffin‘s set was moved to today.

Carlie’s stripped-down, mostly acoustic set was held in the lobby with just her band mates, Phil Hanseroth and Tim Hanseroth. The special set featured the rarely played “What Can I Say” and “Happy” from her 2005 self-titled debut album. Perhaps in response to the conditions outside, Carlile also broke out “Downpour” from 2007’s The Story. Another scarcely played song, “Dying Day” from 2009’s Giving Up The Ghost, made Wednesday’s setlist as did “Most Of All” from 2018’s By the Way, I Forgive You.

Carlile also performed a solo piano arrangement of “Bring My Flowers Now,” which she co-wrote with the Hanseroths for country legend Tanya Tucker’s 2019 Grammy Award-winning album, While I’m Livin’. The song recently earned the Grammy Award for Best County Song and the record won Best Country Album, giving the 61-year-old Tucker her first Grammys.

Carlie and organizers Cloud 9 Adventures debuted Girls Just Wanna Weekend in 2019. This year will also see performances by Sheryl Crow, Lake Street Dive, Lucius, Kt-Tunstall, Jade Bird, Amanda Shires, Yola, Ruby Amanfu, Natalie Hemby, Katie Herzig and Rita Wilson.
