Leftover Salmon enlisted circus performers, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Lindsay Lou and surprise guests Mac Sabbath to join them at Denver’s Mission Ballroom on New Year’s Eve for a celebration of their 30th anniversary. Karl Denson, Lindsay Lou and Silas Herman each sat-in at various points of the band’s two sets “Under The Big Top.”
Circus entertainers greeted fans as they entered the venue and gave out clown noses to attendees. After Lindsay’s set and a performance from KDTU, LoS took the stage 30 years to the day after the band played their first show at the Eldo in Crested Butte. Salmon dressed the part with founding members Vince Herman and Drew Emmitt serving as ringmasters. The band opened with perhaps their signature song, “Pasta On The Mountain,” before rolling through a career-spanning series of material for their first set. LoS’ set fittingly included “Carnival Time” and was highlighted by a “Highway Song” into “Headbag” into “River’s Rising” into “Ask The Fish” into “Funky Mountain Breakdown” sequence.
The venue turned into a circus during setbreak with aerialists among those performing before Mac Sabbath took the stage. Leftover returned for a countdown and started 2020 with “Euphoria.” Then, Denson emerged with saxophone in hand for “Gulf Of Mexico” and a cover of Little Feat’s “Dixie Chicken.” Next, Lindsay Lou joined the band for “Lines Around Your Eyes.” The set continued with “Evermore,” “Aquatic,” “Brand New Good Old Days” and “Breaking Through” before Silas Herman augmented his father’s group on electric guitar for the beloved “Up On The Hill Where They Do The Boogie.” Leftover Salmon said farewell with a “Something Higher” encore.
