Mitski has returned with her first new music since stellar 2018 album Be the Cowboy, sharing a new song entitled ‘Cop Car’.
The single is part of the soundtrack for upcoming supernatural horror film The Turning. Directed by Floria Sigismondi, it’s a reimagining of Henry James’ 1898 novella The Turn of the Screw and stars the likes of Mackenzie Davis and Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard.
‘Cop Car’ is well placed for the film’s eerie setting. It’s menacing, tension-heavy, guitar-driven track that has an extremely cinematic quality to it while also channeling the 90s grunge rock of the era the film is set in, with a climactic middle section that sees Mitski repeating the phrase “I will never die.” Dark as fuck.
The film’s soundtrack is scheduled for release this Friday, 24th January and also includes music from Courtney Love, Soccer Mommy, Lawrence Rothman with Pale Waves, The Aubreys and Empress Of.
Back in June of last year, a few months after she toured Australia as part of the Laneway 2019 lineup, Mitski announced via social media that she was taking a break from touring indefinitely.
