Little Feat Kicks Off Ramble On The Island 2020 In Jamaica

126

With the future of Little Feat unclear after the death of guitarist Paul Barrere last year, the band’s Ramble On The Island destination event may be the end of the line for their 50+ year career. The event is now underway at Melia Braco Village in Trelawney, Jamaica; where Little Feat performed a special pre-event show on Saturday and headlined the action during the first official day of Ramble On The Island on Sunday.

Little Feat are performing in various formations over the course of this year’s Ramble with Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams and other members of The Midnight Ramble Band, Connor Kennedy and Scott Sharrard among those sitting-in with the band. Los Lobos, Vince Herman and Anders Osborne are also aboard for performances at the event.

Fred Tackett led the band through Allen Toussaint’s “Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky” to get their Saturday night set underway. Sam Clayton then fronted the group on “Mellow Down Easy” before Campbell, Clayton and Bill Payne shared vocal duties on “Time Loves A Hero,” Larry belted out “Rocket In My Pocket” and Payne and Clayton sang “Day Or Night.” It was then Sharrard who had a turn in the spotlight for “Texas Twister” ahead of a run of “One Breath At Time,” “Representing The Mambo” and “Church Fallin’ Down.” Next, Payne handled lead vocals on “If I Had A Mind To,” which was followed by a swampy “Sailin’ Shoes,” the Scott-sung “Rad Gumbo” and rave up “Let It Roll.” Finally, Larry and Teresa presented “Missin’ You” as a tribute to Barrere before the “Fat Man In The Bathtub” finale.

Sunday’s show began with “Spanish Moon” and “Honest Man.” Then, the band paired “I Can’t Be Satisfied” and “Hot Tamales” ahead of “Skin It Back” and a “Cat Fever” that gave way to “Texas Rose Cafe.” Next, Little Feat was led by Sharrard on a reworked version of Dixie Chicken track “Fool Yourself,” treated fans to “Red Streamliner,” were fronted by Kennedy on “Cold Cold Cold,” Payne on “Rooster Rag” and Campbell on “Six Feet Of Snow.” A tender “Willin’” followed along with “All That You Dream,” which was sung by Teresa Williams. Little Feat closed out the set with a 20-minute “Dixie Chicken” while “Oh! Atlanta” served as the encore.
