Makaya McCraven Covers Gil Scott-Heron’s ‘Where Did The Night Go’

Makaya McCraven shared his recording of “Where Did The Night Go” from the Chicago-based jazz musician’s upcoming new album, We’re New Again. The record is a reinterpretation of late legendary musician, poet and author Gil Scott-Heron’s final album, I’m New Here.

XL Recordings will issue We’re New Again on February 7, marking the 10th anniversary of the release of I’m New Here. McCraven’s album is the second reimagining of I’m New Here, joining Jamie xx’s 2011 remix album, We’re New Here.

For We’re New Again, McCraven used “samples collected from McCraven’s improvised live sessions with new wave Chicago jazz musicians and vintage samples taken from McCraven’s musician parents’ recordings. It’s a musical situation that reconnects Scott-Heron with his hometown of Chicago, and a lineage of jazz and the blues that perfectly compliments his voice.”

Featuring a sample of “Silhouette Of Eric” by the Stephen McCraven Quartet, “Where Did The Night Go – A Reimagining By Makaya McCraven” can be streamed below:
