Stephen Malkmus Announces New Album ‘Traditional Techniques’ & 2020 Tour Dates, Shares Single

107

Stephen Malkmus announced a new album, Traditional Techniques, due out on March 6 via Matador around which Malkmus will tour in 2020. The singer-songwriter also shared the album’s lead single “Xian Man.”

The Pavement frontman conceived Traditional Techniques while he recorded the Jicks’ 2018 album Sparkle Hard at Halfling Studio in Portland. Inspired by the array of acoustic instruments in the studio, Malkmus quickly took the notion from writing to full-fledged project with the help of Halfling engineer and The Decemberists multi-instrumentalist Chris Funk and guitarist Matt Sweeney. The new record features acoustic instruments including a number from the Afghan tradition.

For the tour, Malkmus has enlisted the help of traditional players Qais Essar (rabab) and Eric Zang (kaval, udu, daf) as well as bassist Brad Truax and drummer Jake Morris who round out the touring band along with Funk and Sweeney. The tour kicks off on March 31 in Minneapolis and will then head through the Midwest, South and Northeast before wrapping up in Detroit on April 19. Tickets are available via Stephen Malkmus’ website.
