Tedeschi Trucks Band Goes Acoustic & Jams With Buddy Guy In Chicago

Tedeschi Trucks Band wrapped up their Chicago Theatre residency on Saturday night. Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi treated the Windy City audience to an acoustic section to begin the second set and stopped by Buddy Guy’s Legends after their show to perform with the legend himself.

TTB got things going with “Baby Don’t You Do It,” originally performed by Marvin Gaye but often covered by classic rock acts like The Band and The Who. The band then reeled off a trio of original songs with “Do I Look Worried,” “All That I Need” and “Til You Remember.” A cover of Bob Dylan’s “Down In The Flood” came next ahead of “Don’t Know What It Means” and a nod to Chicago bluesman Freddie King with “Have You Ever Loved A Woman.” TTB closed out the set with the classic “Bound For Glory” from their 2011 album Revelator.

Derek and Susan –along with backing vocalists Mike Mattison, Mark Rivers and Alecia Chakour — took the stage for the acoustic portion of the second set, opening up with “Strengthen What Remains” from 2019’s Signs. After the song, Tedeschi acknowledged Mattison — who wrote the number — and also the late Kofi Burbridge who played flute on the studio version. The gospel traditional “Keep Your Lamp Trimmed And Burning” came next, which saw other band members joining in and singing along on the call and response chorus. The acoustic section continued with Sippie Wallace’s “Women Be Wise” and blues standards “Forty Four” and “It Hurts Me Too” to close out the acoustic section

Plugged back in, TTB offered up Dr. John’s “I Walk On Guilded Splinters” ahead of the classic “Midnight In Harlem.” Little Milton’s “More And More” followed ahead of the classic TTB set-closing section of their own “The Storm” (from 2013’s Made Up Mind) and The Allman Brothers Band’s “Whipping Post.” TTB would retake the stage for an encore of the Matthew Moore-penned, Joe Cocker-performed “Space Captain” to close out their Chicago Theatre residency.

But Susan and Derek weren’t done yet. The couple stopped into Buddy Guy’s Legends club to perform with Guy. Tedeschi joined Buddy during “Feels Like Rain,” written by John Hiatt and the title track to Guy’s 1993 LP, with Derek soon following on slide. Derek and Susan then stuck around for Junior Wells’ “Hoodoo Man Blues.”
