The Avett Brothers held a home state New Year’s Eve concert at Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina. The band’s customary December 31 guest, Valient Himself of metal band Valient Thorr, once again fulfilled the role of Father Time, helping to lead “Auld Lang Syne,” which was followed by The Avetts’ debut cover of Steve Miller Band’s “Fly Like An Eagle.”
After Valient Himself led the countdown to midnight and the aforementioned “Auld Lang Syne” he ditched his Father Time costume before fronting the band on “Fly Like An Eagle.” The main set then closed with “Ain’t No Man.”
Earlier in the evening, The Avett Brothers performed several songs from their 2019 studio album, Closer Than Together, offering live takes on “Bleeding White,” “High Steppin,’” “Long Story Short,” “New Woman’s World,” “We Americans” and “Who Will I Hold.” Those were played alongside longtime favorites such as “Shame,” “At the Beach,” “Die Die Die,” “The Ballad of Love and Hate,” “Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise,” “Morning Song,” “Distraction #74” and “Slight Figure of Speech,” among others.
The encore was initiated with “The Traveling Song.” The Avetts then covered “The Prettiest Thing,” a David Childers & The Modern Don Juans tune that references New Year’s Eve.
