The Disco Biscuits Dust Off ‘Sabre Dance’ At Chicago Finale

136

The Disco Biscuits closed out their three-night run at Chicago’s Riviera Theatre on Saturday night. The jamtronica pioneers delivered the first “Sabre Dance” in a year and offered up two sets that featured a number of inverted excursions.

The first segment saw guitarist Jon Gutwillig pumping his fist to get everyone in time before firing off the rowdy opening riff of “7-11” followed by drummer Allen Aucoin dropping the band into the more mellow verse on the roller coaster tune which the band would interlace throughout the entire first set. Next, the quartet headed into the usually standalone “Rivers” that found its way back into “7-11” which in turn morphed into an inverted version of the classic “Little Betty Boop.” “7-11” fittingly capped off the monster continuous section. But the band kept going with the Electron tune “Miracles” that then led into another inverted take, this time on “Confrontation.” “42” — a song left unfinished the night before — closed out the first frame.

Bassist Marc Brownstein addressed the crowd before the second set by excitedly saying that he met bass luthier Robert Elrick — whose basses Brownie plays — backstage. The vintage, somewhat sinister “Vassillios” got the second set going with keyboardist Aron Magner adding textures of Fender Rhodes, swelling Hammond organ and ascending piano octaves. The Biscuits jammed right into new song “Anthem” (debuted at the tour opening run in McKees Rocks). “Anthem” then headed into the middle portion of “Above The Waves.” The band got into a “Tractobeam Jam” that contained a Magic Tape section. The third inverted outing came next with “The Great Abyss” which got right into more new material in “4th Of July.” Bisco checked off the rest of “Above The Waves” with yet another inverted tune. The big bust out of classical composer Aram Khachaturian‘s “Sabre Dance” capped off the second set, last time played during the band’s 2018 New Year’s run in Philadelphia and featured on their The Classical Set album.

The Disco Biscuits eased into “Story of the World” to start off the encore but got into some funky jamming heading into “Station” before returning to “Story Of The World” to bring the evening to a close. Check out pro-shot full show video below:
