Umphrey’s McGee & Gene Ween Team At Summer Camp Music Festival 2015

Umphrey’s McGee will reunite with old friend Gene Ween for a Godboner set at Red Rocks in Morrison, Colorado on June 21. In honor of the news, this week’s Sunday Cinema features high-quality video of their first collaboration, which took place on May 22, 2015 at the Summer Camp Music Festival in Chillicothe, Illinois.

Gener and UM performed as “Godboner Meets Gene Ween” during Ween‘s four-year breakup. Just a few months later, Ween would announce their reunion, which began on February 12, 2016 in Broomfield, Colorado and continues through the present. Umphrey’s kicked off the set sans Gener for “Puppet String” and “JaJunk.” The man born Aaron Freeman then emerged for a run of Ween classics that included the 12 Golden Country Greats gem “Japanese Cowboy.” It had been 19 years since Gener last sang the song and Ween has performed it regularly since reuniting.

Freeman was in good voice throughout “Spinal Meningitis,” “Baby Bitch” and “Take Me Away,” all of which UM crushed. Then, Gener led the group on a cover of Billy Joel’s “The Stranger.” Next, Godboner jammed on the Ween chestnut “Voodoo Lady.” The collaboration ended with the pairing of “Freedom Of ’76” and “Transdermal Celebration.” Watch video of Umphrey’s McGee & Gene Ween’s Godboner set captured by madpicken below:
