Umphrey’s McGee Teams With Mad Dog & His Filthy Little Secret Horns On New Year’s Eve 2019 – 2020 In Denver

116

In typical Umphrey’s McGee tradition, the band welcomed the Mad Dog & his Filthy Little Secret horns for a large swath of their New Year’s Eve concert on Tuesday night at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver. The three-set show featured a pair of bust outs, a new original and four cover debuts.

UM came out of the gates with a hard-charging “The Floor” and it’s you rocker “It Doesn’t Matter.” Next up was the two-year-old original “It Doesn’t Matter” and “The Silent Type.” The latter gave way to a 15-minute “2×2” that featured a bliss jam and led into a set-closing “Miss Tinkle’s Overture.” Mad Dog & his Filthy Little Secret horns — consisting of Michael “Mad Dog” Mavridoglou on trumpet, Jeff Coffin on saxophone, Chris Ott on trombone and Josh Quinlan on saxophone — joined Umphrey’s for a run of “Smell The Mitten,” “Modern Love” and “13 Days” to kick off set two. “Modern Love” was penned by David Bowie and released on his 1983 album, Let’s Dance. Guitarist Jake Cinninger handled lead vocals on the UM debut of the song. Last night’s “13 Days” was just the seventh of the past five years.

The second set rolled on with keyboardist Joel Cummins stepping into the spotlight for an exploratory “Phil’s Farm” that was heavy on funk. “Night Nurse” followed along with Cinninger’s “Women Wine & Song” and “Bad Friday.” The horns then returned for the first “Headphones & Snowcones” since August 12, 2016 – a span of 304 shows. UM and the horns capped the frame with a debut cover of Olivia Newton-John’s 1981 hit “Physical” featuring falsetto vocals from guitarist Brendan Bayliss.

“All In Time” started the third set and paved the way for a countdown that led into the traditional “Auld Lang Syne” to begin 2020. The horns came out for “All In Time” and “Auld Lang Syne” and remained on stage for “Suxity,” a new original sung by Bayliss, and UM’s first ever rendition of Jamiroquai’s “Alright.” Jamiroquai originally released “Alright” on their 1996 studio album, Travelling Without Moving. The sextet went at it alone for a slightly extended “Dump City” and fan favorite “Pay The Snucka.” Umphrey’s then busted out their cover of The Lonely Island’s “Dick In A Box” for the first time since January 6, 2007 – a span of 1,364 shows. Last night’s final set concluded with “The Triple Wide” before UM closed out the evening with an encore featuring a debut cover of Fantastic Negrito’s “Bullshit Anthem” and the end of “All In Time.”
