Widespread Panic Welcomes Marcus King At Panic En La Playa

103

Widespread Panic kicked off their four-night Panic En La Playa Nueve run at the Hard Rock Hotel in Riviera Maya, Mexico on Friday night. WSP welcomed Panic En La Playa performer Marcus King for a pair of songs in the second set.

Panic got things underway with a nod to the late great Warren Zevon on what would have been his 73rd birthday with their cover of “Lawyers, Guns & Money.” WSP then delivered classics “Chilly Water” and “Stop-Go” ahead of a cover of Talking Heads’ “Heaven.” After more vintage Panic in “Tall Boy” the band would return to Talking Heads with “Papa Legba” before closing out out the first frame with “Junior.”

The second set got underway with “Rumble,” for just the third time since debuting the song in 2017, followed by “One-Armed Steve.” After a cover of Alan Price’s “Sell Sell,” “Bear’s Gone Fishin’” lead into “Hatfield.” Panic then welcomed King for the traditional blues number “One Kind Favor.” The Panic En La Playa guest spot marked King’s sixth time sitting in with the band, according to WSP fan-site Everyday Companion, including 2018’s Mexico run. Panic eased into the shuffling blues sung by bassist Dave Schools who let King take over for some of his rollicking riffing with a big smile on his face. After another verse from Schools, WSP guitarist Jimmy Herring and King traded licks before Schools sang the last verse. King and the band then headed into a cover of the Neil Young-penned Buffalo Springfield song “Mr. Soul.” Panic continued with “Thought Sausage” and “Radio Child” before closing out the set with the Jerry Joseph number “Climb To Safety.”

For the encore, Widespread Panic delivered their crowd-pleasing cover of Traffic’s “Low Spark Of High-Heeled Boys” and then headed into a fitting “Tie Your Shoes” before returning to “Low Spark” to cap off the evening.
