2019 Australian Music Prize Finalists Announced

162

The list of Australian Music Prize nominees for 2019 have been whittled down to just nine finalists and sorry Barnesy, you’re out.

The last albums standing in the running for the mammoth $30K cash prize include:

  1. Ainslie Wills – All You Have Is All You Need
  2. Amyl & the Sniffers – Amyl & the Sniffers
  3. Dispossessed – Warpath Never Ended
  4. Julia Jacklin – Crushing
  5. Methyl Ethel – Triage
  6. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds – Ghosteen
  7. Sampa The Great – The Return
  8. Sleep D – Rebel Force
  9. Thelma Plum – Better In Blak

Some of the big dogs knocked out of contention from the original shortlist of 107 albums include Alex Lahey’s The Best Of Luck Club, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard’s Fishing For Fishies, Stella Donnelly’s Beware of the Dogs and Jimmy Barnes’ My Criminal Record.

The shortlist has been chosen by a panel of experts, who will come together IRL for a day of discussion, debate and possibly argument to decide the musical merits of each release, and choose the ultimate victor.

Australian Music Prize judge Cameron Adams says: “As a first time AMP judge, binge-listening was a chance to revisit great albums and discover albums that had slipped through the cracks now we’re all seemingly bombarded with more music than ever before.

“Heaven knows how they managed to cull all those albums down, but they’ve come up with a fine nine that is a killer snapshot of Australian music in the last 12 months.”

The 2019 Australian Music Prize winner will be revealed in March.

Place your bets.
