A Spike Lee-directed film version of David Byrne‘s American Utopia Broadway musical is coming soon as per Deadline’s exclusive report. The musical ends its run at New York City’s Hudson Theatre on February 16 after premiering in October 2019. Participant is aboard as lead financier and executive producer. River Road Entertainment & Warner Music Group are also financing the forthcoming film.
“Pinch me. This couldn’t have worked out better for this project,” said Byrne in a statement. “Spike Lee directing and Participant producing — two socially engaged teams, well, three if you count us in the band, coming together in what I feel will be something moving, important, and unlike anything anyone has seen before.” David Byrne’s American Utopia features the former Talking Heads frontman and 11 other musicians performing songs from throughout Byrne’s career “untethered” with choreography by Annie-B Parson. The film is set for a 2020 release.
