Early, out-of-print music from members of The Allman Brothers Band is headed for re-release. Four records from proto-Allman projects Hour Glass, Allman Joys and 31st Of February will see CD releases for the first time and return to vinyl after nearly 50 years on March 27.
Duane and Gregg Allman formed The Escorts fresh out of high school and soon changed the name to the Allman Joys. The group recorded their self-titled debut in 1966 which wouldn’t see the light of day until 1973 and has remained out of print ever since. Gregg and Duane would then go on to form Hour Glass, who released another self-titled debut in 1967 and Power Of Love in 1968. These recordings document the brothers discovering their signature sound.
The fourth release features a band with Allman drummer Butch Trucks called 31st Of February. Recorded in 1968 but not released until 1972 under the title Duane & Gregg, the session includes an early version of the Gregg Allman classic “Melissa.”
