105

The world premiere of the new documentary Jimmy Carter Rock & Roll President will kick off the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival. A screening of the film and concert featuring performances from Willie Nelson, Nile Rodgers and more will take place at the Beacon Theatre in New York City on April 15.

Directed by Mary Wharton, the “rockumentary-style presidential portrait” examines how Jimmy Carter used his love of music and relationship with popular musicians to help him win the 1976 election and become the 39th president of the United States. Carter spoke with the filmmakers in 2018 for interviews used in the film, which also features archival footage of Nelson, Aretha Franklin, Jimmy Buffett, Paul Simon and others.

“The film accurately captures my love for all music and the importance music has played in my personal and professional life. I remain hopeful and believe that music can serve to bring us together as a nation. Rosalynn and I are pleased with the fine film Mary and [producer] Chris [Farrell] have made and thank all those involved for telling this story. We are thrilled that it will debut at the Tribeca Film Festival,” said President Jimmy Carter in a statement.
