Patti Smith, Margo Price, Iggy Pop and were among the performers at the 33rd annual Tibet House benefit concert on Wednesday night at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Philip Glass curated the show from which proceeds went towards Tibet House US, a non-profit educational institution and cultural embassy dedicated to preserving Tibet’s unique culture.
A group of Tibetan Monks chanted to start the concert before Tibet House president Bob Thurman and Philip Glass spoke. Then, Stewart Hurwood utilized a series of guitars and amps to create feedback for a piece aptly titled “Drones.” Next, Laurie Anderson emerged along with Rubin Kodheli, Jesse Paris Smith and Tenzin Choegyal to perform tunes from Songs From The Bardo. At one point, Anderson urged the crowd to participate and sing along with “This Is The Time.”
Resistance Revival Chorus emerged from all corners of the venue to perform an a capella number before Phoebe Bridgers made her debut at the event. Bridgers was backed by the Scorchio Quartet strings for her brand new single “Garden Song” and then Berninger’s Serpentine Prison band joined in on “Scott Street.” Phoebe stuck around to duet with Berninger on “Walking On A String.” The National frontman then led his band on “Distance Axis” and a cover of Mercury Rev’s “Holes.”
The concert continued with Choegyal’s “Snow Lion” ahead of Bettye LaVette belting out Bob Dylan’s “The Times They Are A Changin’,” George Harrison’s “Isn’t It A Pity” and her own “They Call It Love.” Sandra Oh emerged next to recite Allen Ginsberg’s “When the Light Appears” accompanied by Philip Glass on piano. Then, Margo Price performed “Better Than Nothin’” for the first time and teamed with her husband, Jeremy Ivey and Patti’s band for “I’d Die For You” and “All American Made.” Pop was up next to recite Lou Reed’s “We Are The People” and then teamed with Laurie Anderson, Rubin Kodheli and Tony Shanahan on a wild and raucous “I Wanna Be Your Dog” from his days in The Stooges.
Patti Smith took her normal spot closing out the Tibet House benefit. Smith led her band through the Kurt Cobain tribute “About A Boy” and then performed the classic “Don’t Say Nothin’.” The concert ended as all Tibet House benefit do, with all of the evening’s performers joining Patti Smith for “People Have The Power.”
