Phil Lesh & Friends recreated a Grateful Dead show that took place on March 15, 1969 last night at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California. The band completed a series of shows in which the Dead bassist and his band would use the same setlist that the Grateful Dead did on his birthday.
March 15, 1969 was Phil’s 29th birthday and the Dead celebrated by performing at the Hilton Hotel in their hometown of San Francisco. On Monday, Lesh was joined by guitarists Scott Law and Stu Allen, keyboardist Adam MacDougall and drummer Sean Nelson. The quintet opened with a “Morning Dew” sung by Allen before the band took “Alligator” deep for a version that included a drum solo. The two-hour performance continued with a “Hard To Handle” featuring Stu on lead vocals and a “Good Morning Little School Girl” featuring Scott Law on lead vocals. Next up was an exploratory “Dark Star” into “St. Stephen” into “The Eleven” sequence that spanned over 35 minutes and bled into the evening’s “Turn On Your Love Light” finale.
