Phil Lesh & Friends Recreate 1990 Grateful Dead Concert At Terrapin

140

Phil Lesh & Friends performed the same setlist the Grateful Dead did on March 15, 1990 over the past two nights at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California. The band featured Phil Lesh on bass, keyboardist Holly Bowling, drummer John Molo and guitarists Grahame Lesh and Stu Allen.

The group recreated the first set the Dead played on Phil’s 50th birthday at the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland on Monday night. Grahame and Stu shared vocals on the “Jack Straw” opener before Allen belted out “Sugaree” and everyone but Molo sang “Easy To Love You.” A rousing “Walkin’ Blues” was up next along with an “Althea” featuring a stellar solo from Holly. The audience then did their part in recreating the “We want Phil!” chant that rang out at the Cap Centre leading into the bassist singing Bob Dylan’s “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues.” Lesh & Friends ended the set with a run of “Tennessee Jed,” “Cassidy” and “Don’t Ease Me In.” The encore featured “Going Down The Road Feelin’ Bad” into “Not Fade Away” into “And We Bid You Goodnight.”

Phil Lesh & Friends picked up where they left off last night. A nearly 20-minute “China Cat Sunflower”/”I Know You Rider” pairing got the show underway. Then, Grahame channeled Bob Weir on “Samson & Delilah” and Phil handled lead vocals on “Terrapin Station.” Molo had help from his band mates on the “Drums” that followed ahead of a wild “Space” from the instrumentalists. When the entire band returned, Grahame Lesh sang Brent Mydland’s tender ballad “I Will Take You Home.” Next, Allen fronted the tender “Wharf Rat” and Grahame led “Throwing Stones.” Another “Not Fade Away” brought the set to close. For the encore, Phil and company covered The Beatles’ “Revolution” just as the Dead did on March 15, 1990.
