The JamBase Podcast: Nikki Glaspie & Skerik

133

Interviews with drummer Nikki Glaspie and saxophonist Skerik recorded aboard Jam Cruise 18 are featured in the latest episode of The JamBase Podcast. Glaspie goes “Reelin’ In The Years” and Skerik talks “The Art Of The Sit-In” on Episode 56, which also includes a brief profile of non-profit organization The Mockingbird Foundation.

Nikki Glaspie spoke with JamBase’s Scott Bernstein on Jam Cruise for “Reelin’ In The Years,” a segment in which musicians discuss their illustrious careers by detailing the various methods of transportation used for each project. Glaspie first hit the road as part of the Sam Kininger Band and then toured with Martin Luther. A huge opportunity came in 2006 when she joined Beyonce‘s band and toured with her through 2011. Nikki recalled the private planes, fancy hotels and huge arenas that were part of the experience. The drummer also talked about touring with Dumpstaphunk and her current roles behind the kit with her own band, The Nth Power, and with legendary saxophonist Maceo Parker.

The episode stays on the boat for a “The Art Of The Sit-In” interview with Skerik and JamBase’s Court Scott. Skerik talked about early in his career, while living in London and primarily performing as a busker, how he would show up unannounced at gigs and – often successfully – manage his way onstage with the band performing that night. He also described what makes a sit-in successful and the things that can wrong to make it unsuccessful. Skerik also pinpointed a sit-in with Turkuaz, that happened aboard a previous Jam Cruise, and explained what made it a particularly memorable collaboration among the many he’s participated in throughout his career.
