Trey Anastasio Joins Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds In Mexico

201

Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio made a surprise appearance with Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds in Mexico on Sunday night. The unexpected sit-in occured during the final night of Dave & Tim’s Riviera Maya destination event at the Moon Palace Hotel in Cancun, Mexico.

Anastasio headed to Mexico soon after performing with Oysterhead in Colorado on Friday and Saturday. Trey emerged toward the end of Dave and Tim’s set and accompanied the pair on “Waste.” Matthews recorded the Billy Breathes song for the 2000 Phish tribute album, Sharin’ In The Groove, and began a number Dave Mathews Band encores in 2001 with solo renditions of “Waste.” Matthews and Anastasio also performed “Waste” during Dave & Friends shows in 2003 and 2004, and again at the 2018 Concert For Island Relief at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

The three guitarists then played Phish’s “Bathtub Gin,” which was also played a few times at Dave & Friends shows but had not been publicly performed by Matthews since collaborating with Trey at the 2006 Dave & Friends Caribbean Cruise Getaway. Outside of the Trey sit-in, Sunday’s set also featured the first Dave & Tim performance of “#27” since 2014, a solo Reynolds cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” and other favorites like “Too Much,” “Jimi Thing,” “So Much To Say,” “Stay Wating Time,” and “Dancing Nancies.”

Matthews began the encore with solo renditions of “Here On Out” and “Some Devil.” Tim then joined a cover of Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower.” The audience on the beach was then treated to a second encore as the pair retook the stage for a “Crash Into Me” finale.
