Gimme Shelter In Place: Strangefolk Covers Grateful Dead’s ‘Tennessee Jed’

131

Gimme Shelter In Place is JamBase’s new daily archival video series launched for fans who right now can’t go see live music. Canceled concerts and music festivals due to social distancing and sheltering in place in response to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic brought a halt to tours around the globe. We know nothing can truly replace seeing live music in person, but we hope the Gimme Shelter In Place live videos provide a taste of those memorable experiences.

We’re pulling out another outtake from the JamBase Songs Of Their Own Grateful Dead cover series with a performance by Strangefolk guitarists Reid Genauer and Jon Trafton. In 2015, JamBase rolled out 50 videos of musicians covering Grateful Dead originals in the lead up to the five 50th anniversary Fare Thee Well shows held that summer — and Reid and John were one of the few participants who appeared more than once during the series.

The duo contributed covers of the Jerry Garcia/Robert Hunter favorites “To Lay Me Down” and “Althea,” but that wasn’t all they recorded during the session at JamBase’s former office. Also on the setlist that afternoon in San Francisco was the Grateful Dead classic “Tennessee Jed.”

While sheltering in place, Genauer and Trafton teleconferenced with JamBase CEO David Onigman and his Gimme Shelter In Place co-producer Jake Alexander about the Songs Of Their Own session, respond to comments left on their prior JamBase videos, discuss how Jake came to work on Reid’s Conspire To Smile project and more. Here’s the chat:

Watch Reid and Jon cover “Tenneesee Jed” and all of the Gimme Shelter In Place videos in the playlist below:

Stay tuned as we share a new Gimme Shelter In Place live performance video every weekday for the foreseeable future. Keep tabs on livestreams via the JamBase Livestreams Calendar, which offers the ability to toggle back and forth between streams, and be sure to subscribe to the JamBase YouTube channel.
