Happy Birthday Eric Clapton: Slowhand In Buenos Aires 1990

Three-time Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductee Eric Clapton was born in Surrey, England on this date in 1945. In celebration of the legendary guitarist’s 75th birthday, enjoy pro-shot video from Slowhand’s October 5, 1990 concert at Estadio River Plate in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Clapton first came to fame as a member of pioneering British blues-rock band the Yardbirds. EC left the group in 1965 and joined John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers for a short spell that same year. In 1966 the guitarist formed the first true supergroup, Cream, with Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce. The trio only lasted for two years but made quite a splash during that time. Slowhand went on to lead Blind Faith and Derek & The Dominos, two more groups that short-lived but legendary bands. He then embarked on a hit-making solo career. While Clapton has stopped touring, he still performs live from time to time with a handful of concerts scheduled for 2018.

In 1990, Clapton was touring behind Journeyman. The guitarist was backed by bassist Nathan East, keyboardists Greg Phillinganes and Alan Cark, drummer Steve Ferrone, guitarist Phil Palmer, percussionist Ray Cooper and vocalists Katie Kissoon and Tessa Niles for the tour.

Slowhand and his band reeled off one masterpiece after another from Clapton’s career on October 5, 1990. The ensemble kicked off the show with “Pretending” and included such beloved classics as “I Shot The Sheriff,” “White Room,” “Can’t Find My Way Home,” “Badge,” “Wonderful Tonight,” “Layla,” “Crossroads” and “Sunshine Of Your Love.”
