The Asheville, NC based jamtronica quintet Papadosio descended upon the Brooklyn Bowl last Wednesday with a slimmed down arsenal of equipment, killer lights, new songs and the desire to explore new frontiers on their Microdosio Tour. Their long set brought delight from the crowd into the night. They were supported by electronic outfit Jaw Gems.
Jaw Gems kicked off the night with an organically infused electronic beat set. They drew a decent crowd early, and sounded similar at times to STS9 and the main act tonight, Papadosio. The trio consisted of a bass, keyboards and a drummer, all utilizing electronic effects in combination with traditional instruments.
Papadosio wasted no time, and took the stage shortly after Jaw Gems. Their 2 hour set included new songs, as well as old favorites, with smooth, melodic electronic beats. Most importantly, each musician utilized less equipment in an effort to create new sounds within the intimate settings of the Brooklyn Bowl. They also brought a sweet light right that enhanced the already stellar house lights at the Brooklyn Bowl, elevating the exploratory experience.
The band consists of Mike Healy (drums), Sam Brouse (keyboards), Rob McConnell (bass), Anthony Thogmartin (guitar), and Billy Brouse (keyboards). Thogmartin and the Brouse brothers manned laptops in the center, with McConnell and Healy as bookends around them. Healy was often seen looking to the right at his band mates with a huge smile. The crowd’s arms were in the air frequently, indicating the sincere joy permeating the room.
