Bringing an other-worldly sound, Architrave has established its pioneering of dark wave electronic music in the Capital Region. The duo’s album ‘This Perfect Day,’ coming out April 3, solidifies this feat.
The over-arching message of this album couldn’t have come at
a more appropriate time. As described by band member Jennifer Maher Coleman,
this album embodies the human need for certain kinds of solitude, which is now
translated into isolation during the COVID-19 crisis.
Maher Coleman explained: “A lot of songs on the album are
sort of from the perspective of how society is deteriorating … There’s this
crazy dystopian sense of fear.”
An exciting sense of fear is exactly what you get from this
album. The opening track “Come Through” starts the album with a sinister intro,
but the song is quickly recognized as a disguised beauty with a synth-heavy
sound.
“If A Tree Falls,” the album’s fourth track, builds on the
idea of solitude with stand-out lyrics, “ … tell me what has changed and what’s
the same.” These lyrics convey how solitude can at times be a positive for the
mind and body.
Perhaps the most dystopian-ringing song of the record,
“Elevation” talks about awakening to a new dark world. “Above the nation too
wild to fear us, and you dream in lies,” sings Maher Coleman on one of her
favorite songs. This post-punk, funky-feeling track explores whether or not a
rise and fall will have any impact.
Architrave has worked on this album for about a year, perfecting its hellish feel. It’s easy to close your eyes and get lost in the vibes this album radiates.
