Ford Unveils 1,400-HP Mustang Cobra Jet Drag Racer

161

Ford Performance has prototyped the American automaker’s second all-electric Mustang, but it’s a far cry from the divisive Mach-E crossover SUV

Just like the OG Cobra Jet that dominated drag strips in the 1960s, the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 serves the sole purpose of going ridiculously fast in a straight line. Projections predict an output of 1,400-horsepower and 1,100 pound-feet of instant torque, as well as the absurd ability to cross the quarter-mile marker in the low-8-second range at 170-plus mph.

The Cobra Jet 1400 is a one-off prototype that showcases Ford’s electric drivetrain tech, so performance comparisons to production models aren’t warranted. Other details haven’t been announced, but it’s expected to make a world debut at a drag racing event later this year.

“Ford has always used motorsport to demonstrate innovation,” said Dave Pericak, Global Director, Ford Icons. “Electric powertrains give us a completely new kind of performance and the all-electric Cobra Jet 1400 is one example of pushing new technology to the absolute limit.

While very few will have the privilege of climbing into the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400’s cockpit, we wouldn’t mind seeing that oversized red, black, blue and gray serpent decal on Ford’s other ponies.

How much is the electric Ford Mustang?

As for the production Mustang Mach-E, the first examples are due out in 2021. The Premium model starts at $50,600, the limited First Edition starts at $59,900, the Select starts at $43,895, the California Route 1 starts at $52,400, and the GT variants start at $60,500.
