Gimme Shelter In Place: Leftover Salmon Performs ‘Liza’

123

Gimme Shelter In Place is JamBase’s new daily archival video series launched for fans who right now can’t go see live music. Canceled concerts and music festivals due to social distancing and sheltering in place in response to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic brought a halt to tours around the globe. We know nothing can truly replace seeing live music in person, but we hope the Gimme Shelter In Place live videos provide a taste of those memorable experiences.

Recorded in 2015 as part of JamBase’s Songs Of Their Own Grateful Dead 50th anniversary video series, an outtake from veteran jamgrass outfit Leftover Salmon is today’s featured video. The Colorado-based band recorded their Songs Of Their Own session at Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh‘s concert venue and restaurant Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California.

At the time, LoS had set up shop at TXR for a three-night run of shows. Our recording session took place on the backstage patio with guitarist Vince Herman, mandolinist Drew Emmitt and banjoist Andy Thorn. The trio contributed a cover of the Grateful Dead classic “Mr. Charlie.” They also treated the staff within earshot to a live performance of “Liza.”

“Liza” originally appeared on Leftover Salmon’s 2012 studio album, Aquatic Hitchhiker. The band created their own spin on the traditional “Li’l Liza Jane” by adding new verses penned by Vince Herman. Los Lobos multi-instrumentalist Steve Berlin, who produced and mixed the album, contributed percussion to the studio version. Fats Domino, Bing Crosby, Nina Simone, The Band, Alison Krauss & Union Station are among the artists that have recorded songs rooted in “Li’l Liza Jane,” which dates back to 1916 as per Wikipedia.
