Gimme Shelter In Place: Yonder Mountain String Band Performs ‘Black Sheep’

Gimme Shelter In Place is JamBase’s new daily archival video series launched for fans who right now can’t go see live music. Canceled concerts and music festivals due to social distancing and sheltering in place in response to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic brought a halt to tours around the globe. We know nothing can truly replace seeing live music in person, but we hope the Gimme Shelter In Place live videos provide a taste of those memorable experiences.

Back in 2015, Yonder Mountain String Band was part of JamBase’s Songs Of Their Own Grateful Dead 50th anniversary video series. The group’s version of “Shakedown Street” came out second in the series that eventually presented 50 different covers from the Dead’s songbook.

YMSB was on tour at the time in support of their studio album, Black Sheep. The band had lit out from Reno (thankfully not trailed by 20 hounds) to play The Fox Theater in Oakland. Their session took place after soundcheck at The Fox and since they were already properly warmed up, they continued to play after delivering their “Shakedown Street” cover.

One of the outtakes from Yonder’s session was a performance of the Black Sheep title track. The studio album was the band’s first to feature fiddler Allie Kral and mandolinist Jacob Jolliff who joined the band following the departure of co-founding member Jeff Austin, who sadly died last year.

Yonder Mountain String Band continued to evolve after the release of Black Sheep. Its follow-up, Love. Aint Love came out in 2017. Joliff played his final shows with YMSB at the end of 2019 and multi-instrumentalist Nick Piccininni joined the band at the start of 2020.
