Jim James Covers ‘Lean On Me’ For ‘Colbert’

My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James covered Bill Withers’ “Lean On Me” for Monday’s The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. James’ performance came just days after the music world was rocked by the news Withers succumed to a heart condition.

Each day this week through Thursday, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert will present a special at-home edition of the program. James performed on an episode that also featured special guests Chance The Rapper and Thomas Lennon. R.E.M.‘s Michael Stipe will serve as the musical guest tonight, Tuesday, April 8.

Bill Withers originally released “Lean On Me” as the first single from 1972’s Still Bill, his sophomore studio album. Withers died a week ago Monday at his home in Los Angeles. Watch Jim James’ rendition of one of Bill’s most iconic songs:
