Listen To Allman Brothers Band ‘Chicago Blues Again’ Compilation

106

The original The Allman Brothers Band lineup is featured on the Chicago Blues Again bootleg, a portion of which appeared on YouTube today. While the 54-minute audio recording is listed as taking place in 1971 at Chicago radio station WXRT, there’s long been debate amongst ABB fans as to whether the bulk was actually taped at New York City’s A&R Recording Studios. Regardless, any chance to hear Duane Allman and the OG Allmans lineup is a good one.

Duane and his brother Gregg Allman were joined in the initial lineup by drummers Butch Trucks and Jaimoe as well as bassist Berry Oakley and guitarist Dickey Betts. The recording, for which the back cover art claims was taped live from WXRT in Early 1971, begins with covers of Blind Willie McTell’s “Statesboro Blues” and “Trouble No More” by Muddy Waters.

The first original on the recording, Gregg’s “Don’t Keep Me Wonderin’,” comes next along with takes on Elmore James’ “Did Somebody Wrong” and “One Way Out.” Duane then introduces the Dickey Betts instrumental “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed” before a cover of T-Bone Walker’s “Stormy Monday.” The sound quality changes around the 40-minute mark as the version of Chicago Blues Again found below ends with partial versions of “Mountain Jam” and “Liz Reed” as well as a full “Trouble No More” recorded during the Love Valley Festival in Love Valley, North Carolina between July 17 – 19, 1970.
